Eriko Tsogo - Wrong Women: Myths From Sky

Opening Reception: February 17, 2018

7:00 PM - 11:00 PM

1112 E. 17th Ave., Denver, CO 80218

Through my work, I seek to explore the conflicting psycho-spiritual, cultural and disjointed effects/ emotional middle space of globalization on marginalized identities with attention to woman’s issues; one who perpetually lives both in war and peace within two worlds, in both of which more or less a stranger. My work is about history and tradition, identity censorship, mythology, folklore,
dreams, spirituality, death, and nature set in contemplative scenarios that transform into symbolic allegories for socio-political issues.

My artistic process derives from a balance of intuitive and concept driven method of experimental creation. In my drawings, I seek to create visual tension through automatic and intended mark making. I like to fuse binary concepts and techniques of representation, from contrasting languages of wet and dry textures, precision and chaos, into stimulatory layers as to create conceptual proximity between forces of opposition and displacement.

Within these (psychological mind) spaces, where the fragments of memory, dreams, and the residues of formative experience intermingle with contemporary mythology – I present a space for the renegotiation of identity and the realignment of desire. By revealing the strange and curious inner-workings of the human condition, I aim to examine the fluctuating operations of human
identity, desire, horror, wonder and fantasy.

On view February 17 through March 31, 2018.

Closing reception: Saturday, March 31st, which will feature a performance piece related to the exhibition.

Of Maples and Manholes

Opening reception: March 2, 2018

6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Access Gallery

909 Santa Fe Dr., Denver, CO 80204

This show is the culmination of our winter residency program exploring the wide variety of printmaking techniques including reduction, collagraph,  and monotype. Pulling inspirations from the beautifully unique manhole covers in cities such as Tokyo and New York as well as creators like Bay area artist Bryan Nash Gill, we focused our final pieces on the patterns and shapes found in some commonly recurring materials– wood and steel. From the earliest Japanese woodblock prints to the letterpress machines that introduced mass printing, wood and steel have always played a central role in printmaking.

Per usual, Access Gallery is taking this idea in a different direction. Our steel comes from everyday objects that we have found in our immediate surroundings. Our wood comes from the allies and scrap piles in our neighborhood. Let’s take what is common and see it through a new lens.

This residency was led by longtime teaching artists and Access Gallery friend, Javier Flores, Curt Bean, Doug Foulke and Rebecca Petty. On view February 16 through March 23, 2018.

The re-working of the found object, along with the screen printed image, give the objects a new life beyond their original function. McCoy’s monotypes are spontaneous improvisations of color and forms made during the process of printing on paper. Other of his works combine inkjet printing on painted and prepared panels, bringing improvisation and abstraction into another dimension.

Letting Go

Opening reception: March 22, 2018

6:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Alto Gallery

4345 W. 41st Ave., Denver, CO 80212

Based on the theme of catharsis, artists prints will be displayed alongside their respective blocks for two days. On the final exhibition day, the blocks will be removed from the walls, destroyed, and documented. Prints will remain on display.

Although marking/destroying printing blocks is a common practice for many printmakers, many viewers don't know this, and as such may not understand the value of such an editioned print. Providing a demonstration en masse has the potential to educate, to motivate, and to be cathartic (for artists and viewers) while underlining the visual theme itself.

Event: March 23, 12:00 PM - Casual meetup where artists can carve blocks, exchange tips/techniques, and pull prints. Light refreshments. Open to the public.

Ink Lounge is working on a screenprinting exhibit as part of the Ink Mixer, where it's going to be all about how versatile screenprinting is and the charm it brings to the printmaking process. CMYK, spot varnishes, metallics, split-fountains, fabric discharge, giant art prints, wearable prints – you name it – they're going to show off what screenprinting can do and how they apply it to a great many things.

On view March 24, 2018.
